Consisting of seven municipalities, the Val di Fassa is entirely crossed by the upper course of the Avisio river (a left tributary of the Adige river), from its sources to the confluence of the rio San Pellegrino in the center of Moena, which forms the natural border with the Val di Fiemme. The valley is surrounded by some of the most important massifs of the Dolomites: the Marmolada, the Sella Group, the Sassolungo Group, the Catinaccio Group, but also by mountains with non-dolomitic lithology such as the Buffaure and the Monzoni.
Together with the valleys of Gardena and Badia in South Tyrol and the valley of Livinallongo and the Ampezzo basin in Veneto, it forms the area where the Ladin language is still spoken (more precisely the Dolomite Ladin). The Val di Fassa is connected to the other Dolomite valleys through the Strada statale 48 delle Dolomiti and numerous mountain passes: the San Pellegrino Pass connects Moena with the Biois valley (BL), the Fedaia Pass connects with Rocca Pietore, the Costalunga Pass connects Vigo di Fassa with the Eggen valley and Lake Carezza, while from Canazei it is possible to reach Livinallongo and Arabba via the Pordoi Pass and the Gardena valley (BZ) via the Sella Pass.
