Passo Giau is located in the center of a vast pastureland, at the foot of Nuvolau (2,574 m) and Averau (2,647 m) from which it is possible to easily reach Monte Pore (2,405 m) or even the Mondeval alp, where Valmo, the Mesolithic man found in the ice at 2150 meters and dating back 7,500 years, was discovered. The view to the west towards Colle Santa Lucia with the Pale di San Martino, the Cime d’Auta, the Marmolada, the Piz Boè, and the Setsass is majestic, as is the view to the east towards the valley of Cortina D’Ampezzo, with the Tofane, Croda Rossa, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Croda da Lago, Lastoni di Formin, etc. (source: Wikipedia). The pass at 2236 m. in the province of Belluno connects Cortina d’Ampezzo to Selva di Cadore and represents one of the legendary passes of the Giro d’Italia, especially from the Selva di Cadore side, for its difficulty, while from the Cortina side it is shorter, but still definitely challenging.
